Depression is a symptom not a mental illness

by Sana Al Hadethee

We have been told that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance and cured by a chemical treatment so called, anti- depressant! There is a shocking increase in antidepressant use around the world. 1 in 4 women start their day with those medication which became the handy solutions for everything from grief, irritability, panic attacks, to insomnia, PMS, and stress. what women really need can’t be found at a pharmacy.

According to Dr. Kelly Brogan, the Author of A mind of your own: “The human body interacts in its environment with deep intelligence. Your body creates symptoms for a reason. The best way to heal the mind is to heal the whole body.

Depression is a symptom of a mismatch, biologically, with lifestyle—we eat a poor diet, too much stress, lack sufficient physical movement, deprive ourselves of natural sunlight, expose ourselves to environmental toxicants, and take too many drugs.

Inflammation is the language that the body speaks, expressing imbalance, inviting change. We usually suppress these symptoms with medication but that is like turning off the smoke alarm when you have a fire going on”. In her holistic approach by looking at depression, she think it is often an inflammatory condition manifested by irregularities in the body that often start far away from the brain and are not associated with so-called “chemical imbalances.” Not a single study has proven that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.

Using antidepressants medications, it only mask the symptoms, and it is not the real solution. Antidepressants has shown in long-term scientific studies to worsen the course of mental illness plus the risks of liver damage, weight gain, sexual dysfunction, and reduced cognitive function they entail. In fact, antidepressants are among the most addictive, more so than alcohol and opiates.
Instead,

Dr. Brogan suggests:
“WE NEED TO LOOK AT THE WHOLE BODY’S ECOSYSTEM: INTESTINAL HEALTH, HORMONAL INTERACTIONS, THE IMMUNE SYSTEM AND AUTOIMMUNE DISORDERS, BLOOD SUGAR BALANCE, AND TOXICANT EXPOSURE”.

In her book Dr. Brogan urges us to read more into feeling depressed and look further because it is a sign for us from our bodies, it is a sign for us to stop and figure out what’s causing our imbalance rather than just masking, suppressing, or rerouting the symptoms. It’s a chance to choose a new story, to engage in radical transformation, to say yes to a different life experience
